San Diego, California

San Diego may be the easiest family city in the country. The weather is mild year-round, the beaches are close to everything, and the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park can fill several days. La Jolla Cove is great for spotting sea lions, and the calm water of Mission Bay suits small children. Older kids enjoy the USS Midway Museum.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is the theme park capital of the world, with Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld and LEGOLAND Florida nearby. It works best for kids roughly 4 to 12. Plan rest days between park days and choose a hotel with a good pool. Our Disney World with kids planning guide covers the details.

Washington, DC

DC is one of the best-value family trips because most of the big museums are free. The National Museum of Natural History, the Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo are favorites with kids. The National Mall is flat and stroller-friendly, and the Metro makes getting around easy.

Planning tip: visit the most popular museums right at opening time, then head outdoors to the Mall or a playground before lunch, when crowds peak.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago combines big-city sights with a lot of open space. Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium are all close to the lakefront, and the Lincoln Park Zoo is free. In summer, the beaches along Lake Michigan are a fun surprise for kids.

Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg and nearby Pigeon Forge are full of family attractions, from aquariums to mini golf, right next to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park has easy waterfall hikes and good chances of seeing wildlife. Cabin rentals with hot tubs and game rooms are popular with families.

Destin, Florida

Destin, on the Florida Panhandle, is known for soft white sand and clear green water. Many beaches have gentle waves suited to young children, and condos with pools and kitchens make longer stays affordable. Late spring and early fall are often calmer and less expensive than peak summer.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is not only for adults. Kids enjoy the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Adventure Science Center and the Nashville Zoo, and live music is easy to find in the afternoon. Pair it with a day trip to nearby state parks.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah’s leafy squares make the historic district a pleasant place to walk with kids. Take a trolley tour to save little legs, then head to Tybee Island for the beach and lighthouse.

How to Choose the Right US Destination

  • Kids’ ages: toddlers do best with beaches and simple days; older kids enjoy cities and theme parks.
  • Season: head south in winter and north or to the mountains in summer.
  • Travel time: a destination within a day’s drive can save money and stress.
  • Budget: cities with free museums and parks stretch your money further.

Budget-Friendly US Family Destinations

If cost is a big factor, look at destinations where the main attractions are free or cheap. Washington, DC and its free museums are the obvious choice, but state parks, lake towns and smaller beach communities can be just as fun. The Gulf Coast of Alabama, the Michigan lakeshore and the Ozarks in Missouri and Arkansas offer lake and beach days at a fraction of the price of big resort towns. A vacation rental with a kitchen and a pool often stretches a family budget further than a hotel.
